Oakland Tribune Op-ed Explains How Mills is Helping Oakland Students Get “Community Ready”
Oakland, CA–August 28, 2013 In an Oakland Tribune op-ed piece, Mills College Professor of Education Joseph Kahne and Mills Research Director Ellen Middaugh detailed a new model of urban civic education that begins in Oakland Unified School District high schools this year.
Kahne and Middaugh serve as co-principal investigators for Educating for Democracy in the Digital Age (EDDA), which is funded by the S.D. Bechtel Jr. Foundation and includes partnerships with Mills College, the National Writing Project, and the Oakland Unified School District. Through EDDA, students will move beyond Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube to learn how to make changes in their communities through improved media literacy and research skills.
