Summer is right around the corner!
This is a busy time of year with final exams, up-coming graduation, searching for internships and applying for summer jobs. Your Career Services team is dedicated to help you get through this time of transition.
Many of you are embarking on your first job or internship this summer. Here are some guidelines to help you succeed. Adapted from Ed Holten's "12 Essential Steps to a Fast Start your Career", Journal of Career Planning and Employment, Spring 1999:
Step 1: Adopt the right attitude.
Step 2: Adjust your expectations. Do a reality check.
Step 3: Master the art of fitting in to a new environment.
Step 4: Manage the impressions you make. You never get a first chance to make a first impression.
Step 5: Build effective relationships. People make the difference.
Step 6: Become a good follower. Learn by example.
Step 7: Understand your organization's culture. Its a whole new world!
Step 8: Develop organizational savvy. Its how you play the game.
Step 9: Understand your role in the organization.
Step 10: Develop work savvy-show them you know your stuff.
Step 11: Master the tasks in your job.
Step 12: Acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities you need to succeed. Take charge!
For more details on each of these steps please make an appointment to meet with your career counselor. Keep in mind that we offer one on one career coaching sessions and we are available to meet with you as long as you require our support. We are open all summer, and look forward to seeing you.
Congratulations to the graduating class of 2008!
