Medical Checklist for New Students

Before you come to Mills, there are a number of ways you can plan ahead to avoid or minimize the complications caused by illness. The following is a medical checklist with some suggestions for what to do and bring:

First-aid kit
Bring a first aid kit, including a thermometer.
Remember, once on campus, the University Health Services Tang Center is available to all Mills students, regardless of health insurance coverage.

Health insurance coverage
If you are covered under a health insurance plan other than the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), bring a copy of your health card (front and back) to campus. It is important to check your policy to be sure you are covered for "out of area" non-emergencies.

Health summary
Bring a health summary from your health care provider if you have chronic health problems (such as asthma or diabetes). This helps University Health Services staff provide you with the best possible care. We also suggest you make an appointment to establish care with a provider before you become ill if you have ongoing health needs. Call 510.642.2000 for an appointment.

Hepatitis B immunization series
Series of three doses are recommended (for those under 19) unless there is a medical contraindication. Hepatitis B immunizations are available at the Tang Center.

Immunization records
Bring a copy with you to campus and to your first appointment at UHS. This will help you accurately record your health history.

Prescription medications
Bring enough of your ongoing medications for three months of school, and bring a copy of the prescription with you. Plan ahead for refills.

Medical Supplies Checklist for Students

As part of maintaining your health, it is wise to keep common medical items in your home at all times. The following is a list of items to use when responding to common symptoms and should not substitute clinic advice and care when needed:

Household item Common symptom
Aspirin or acetaminophen headache
Heating pad Muscle ache
Thermometer Fever
Antacid Upset stomach
Band-aids Minor cuts, bruises
Antihistamine Congestion, allergy
Hydrogen peroxide/Iodine Dirty bruises
Tweezers Splinters
Hydrocortisone cream Bug, spider bites

The Health Programs staff has limited first-aid and self-care supplies available for students. In addition, the UHS Advice Nurse is available to answer medical questions and provide over-the-phone consultations. Call 510.643.7197 to speak with the Advice Nurse, during regular Tang Center business hours. When the Tang Center is closed, After Hours Assistance is available.
