Understanding Health at Mills

Mills College works with the University Health Services to provide two medical care options for students: 1) Basic Medical Services; and 2) the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).

Basic Medical Services

The campus comprehensive fee includes basic medical care. Basic medical care services are comprehensive medical services provided to all mills students through the University Health Services Tang Center, located at 2222 Bancroft Way in Berkeley. The Mills "Basic Medical Services" fees cover most student visits to a Tang Center physician, social worker, nurse practitioner, urgent care clinic provider or health educator. Other UHS Tang Center features include:

  • Telephone advice nurse
  • Walk-in urgent care
  • Professionals experienced in college health
  • Women's health/gynecological care
  • Multi-disciplinary approach to care

While some services are provided without additional charge, others including labs and x-rays carry a moderate fee. Basic medical care is not a comprehensive medical insurance plan, and must be combined with a major medical health insurance plan to provide a complete comprehensive health care package. If you have questions about what is covered under the "Basic Medical Services" contact the Health Programs Director.

The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)

All Mills students are required to have major medical insurance, and are automatically enrolled in the Mills/UHS Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). SHIP is a major medical insurance plan that includes world-wide medical, dental, and vision coverage 365 days a year. In addition to the campus comprehensive fee, the SHIP premium is $1,012 per semester for undergraduate students, $1,100 per semester for graduate students and includes the following benefits:

  • Medical, counseling, dental and vision coverage
  • 365 days of world-wide coverage
  • 100% emergency room and inpatient hospital coverage
  • $15 generic/ $25 brand co-pay for prescriptions at UHS
  • $5,000 annual prescription coverage per year with no deductible
  • 100% coverage of preventative dental services (exams, cleanings, x-rays)
  • Annual eye exam with$5 co-pay
  • Annual frames and lenses or contact lenses $15 co-pay

Medical Wavier Information

Each student can choose to either keep SHIP or complete a "Medical Waiver" form to waive enrollment. If you are considering waiving SHIP enrollment, please compare benefits carefully. Many students choose SHIP over other plans or in addition to their plans to ensure seamless coverage. If you choose to waive SHIP, you must complete a waiver form by August 1, 2008. Please contact the M Center homepage for additional information on the medical waiver process, including how to complete a "Medical Reversal Form" in the event that you need to re-enroll in SHIP. If you waive SHIP enrollment for fall, the waiver extends through the spring semester. Remember, all Mills students can use the UHS Tang Center whether they have SHIP or not.
