This document is designed to answer frequently asked questions about WebMail.
- I want to send mail to someone at Mills but do not know her/his email address. How do I find it?
You have two choices.
Option 1: Type in a person's last name, or the first part of it, or a person's login name in the 'To' box and click on 'Expand Names'. The program will search through all accounts at Mills finding names that match. Please note: The system does not know individuals' nicknames; use last names instead of nicknames. If only one name matches, the program will put it in the 'To' box. If there is more than one, pull down the list and click on the one you want. Then compose your message.
Option 2: In the Compose window, click on the 'addressbook' button, pull down the list showing 'my addressbook', select 'Mills directory', then type the name in the search box and click on 'search'. When the search has finished, click on a name and then on 'To" and 'OK'.
- I know I kept a message that I need but scrolling through all the messages is not working. What's the best way?
Use the 'search' feature of Webmail. This feature is located at the top of the screen on both the folder view and in the message view. To use it, simply click on 'search' and complete the boxes based on what you remember and click on 'search'. If you wish to search all folders, click on 'search all'. The results will be returned grouped by the folder in which the messages were found.
- Someone said they sent me a message but I can not find it. Why?
There are several reasons why you might not find the message.
1. The message might have been tagged as spam. Check your 'spam' folder, just in case.
2. The message might have included a virus. Any message that has a virus is not delivered and the sender is notified.
3. Your email address on the message might have been typed incorrectly. If the address is mistyped but is still a real address, the message will be delivered. If the address is not, the sender will receive a message indicating that delivery failed.
4. Your account might be at its quota. See instructions above to clean out old messages. Our mail system will attempt to deliver the message for three days before informing the sender that the message could not be delivered.
- I created a folder with another email program and I can't see it in Webmail. Why?
When you create a mail folder, the program that created it knows about it but no other program does. To see that folder in other email programs, use the 'subscribe' feature to find and subscribe to it. In Webmail, click on 'Folders' at the top of the screen, then on 'show unsubscribed folders'. Click the boxes of the one(s) you wish to see and then pull down the action list and choose 'subscribe'. In Mozilla, this service is found under 'File'. Other email programs have this same feature.
- I leave my mail open all day. Does Webmail have a feature where I can be notified of new messages?
Yes. When reading your mail, click on 'options', then 'New Mail', then click on the box 'Display pop-up notification of new mail'. A pop-up will appear when new messages arrive.
