Information Technology Services:

Fast Fix for Infected PCs

If Mills College technical staff inform you that your PC is showing signs that it is infected, it means that there is network traffic coming from your PC that is unusual for standard PC use. This is a pattern for worms and viruses and these programs affect the entire campus' ability to perform its work so we need to be diligent in our response.

  1. Disinfect your PC: Click on the following link. http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger , click on the stinger.exe link, choose 'open' and wait 10-30 seconds. Click on 'scan now'. Please reply directly to helpdesk@mills.edu with the results after the program has finished.
  2. Update Windows: If you are not using Internet Explorer, close your browser and start IE. Click on 'Tools' from the taskbar, click on 'Windows Update'. This starts the Windows Update process. Click on 'Scan for updates' and wait briefly. If any 'critical updates' show in the left frame, you will see 'Review and install' in the right frame. Click on it, then on 'Install now'. The download and installation process will start. If you see a pop-up window asking you to 'accept' an agreement, click on 'accept'. Once the process is finished, a new window will ask if you would like to restart your PC. Click on 'yes' and let the PC restart. Please run the 'Windows Update' process again to confirm that there are no remaining critical updates. If you have never updated Windows, this may take two or three tries.
  3. Disinfect your PC: To ensure that you do not get a new infection while Windows is updating, run stinger again.
