Most e-mail clients can be configured to work with the Mills e-mail system. We recommend the free e-mail client Mozilla Thunderbird, which can be downloaded at http://www.mozilla.com. You will need the following settings to configure your e-mail client:
Display Name
- Your full name or whatever you want to appear in the 'From:' field of your messages
E-mail Address
- username@mills.edu where 'username' is your Mills login name
Incoming Mail Server Type
- IMAP (Please do not select POP.)
Incoming Mail Server
- mail.mills.edu
- Select 'Use secure connection (SSL)'
- Do not select 'Secure password authentication (SPA)'
The 'SSL' setting is in a different location in each e-mail client. In Thunderbird, go to the 'Tools' menu, select 'Account Settings', click on 'Server Settings' in the left column, and check the box next to 'Use secure connection (SSL).'
Outgoing Mail Server
- smtp.mills.edu
- Select 'Use name and password' and enter your Mills username or, if applicable, select the option to use the same settings as the incoming mail server
- Send using a secure connection, 'TLS' in Mozilla or Thunderbird or 'SSL' in Outlook or Outlook Express
The outgoing mail settings are in a different location in each e-mail client. In Thunderbird, go to the 'Tools' menu, select 'Account Settings', click on 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)' in the left column, click on the 'Edit' button on the right side of the window, and check the box next to 'Use name and password' and enter your Mills username in the 'User Name:' field. In this same location, also select 'TLS' under 'Use secure connection.'
If you are off campus and using a non-Mills Internet Service Provider (ISP), you may need to set your outgoing mail server to your ISP's outgoing mail server and configure the additional outgoing server settings according to your ISP's instructions. To find what these settings should be, contact your ISP or check their web site.
Account Name or User Name
Password
Mail Folder Path
Again, this setting is in a different location in each e-mail client. In Thunderbird, go to the 'Tools' menu, select 'Account Settings', click on 'Server settings' in the left column, click on the 'Advanced...' button, and in the 'IMAP server directory:' field, enter 'mail/' (without the enclosing quotes but with the trailing slash).
PLEASE NOTE On campus: You must log in to Bluesocket if your computer is wireless or if you are in a residence hall before you will be able to check your e-mail.
