Personal: the H: drive
Every user has a personal file space on a server called Myfiles. Files placed here are protected and accessible from any workstation on campus, as well as from off-campus. Students are encouraged to save any and all types of content here, from classwork to resumes. Faculty and staff are encouraged to use this folder for for the same reasons plus to hold materials from other jobs that can assist you in your job at Mills.
If you login to a Mills PC, your personal folder is automatically assigned as your 'H' drive, H for home. Macs on OS 9 need to use the 'chooser' to find and connect. Macs on OS X use the 'Go/Server' feature.
Anyone wishing to create a personal website can do that on Myfiles. Use this link to request a personal website.
Departmental: the M: drive
Faculty and staff, and student employees, have departmental storage on a server called 'millswork.'
All departments at Mills have a common folder structure. There are two files and three top-level folders in each department's folder.
- The 'department members' file documents all members of the department,
- The 'permissions' file documents who is allowed into each folder and with what permissions.
- The Dropboxes folder allows a department to offer folders in which others can drop off materials.
- The Restricted folder is restricted to members of the department ONLY.
- The Shared folder offers more flexibility. Any folder in your Shared folder is accessible to whomever you choose (student workers, staff/faculty from other departments, guests). Navigate to Departments/Human Resources/Shared for examples of how this works.
Only ITS staff can create top-level folders within the three main folders, but you can choose a mix of personal and collaborative folders and add subfolders and manage your files as you need.
If you login to a Mills PC, the 'departments' folder is automatically assigned as your 'M' drive, M for main-campus. Macs on OS X use the 'Go/Server' feature.
