Students, faculty, and staff with a Mills account can save personal files on the 'myfiles' file server.
IMPORTANT: this procedure is not required if you are using college-owned computers in Computing Services labs. Simply log in to the computer and double-click the icon with your username on the desktop to access your 'myfiles' storage space. Be sure to log out of the computer when you are finished to protect your files from being accessed by the next person to use the computer.
Connecting to myfiles.mills.edu
1. If you are using a wireless computer or personal computer in your residence hall room, be sure to log in via Bluesocket first.
- Open Safari.
- Use your Mills username and password to log in at the Bluesocket interface.
- Once you are logged in, keep the Bluesocket browser window active, as you will need to log out using that window.
- IMPORTANT - When finished with network access, log out via the Bluesocket window.
Note: If there is no Bluesocket icon active, close all Safari windows and then reopen Safari. This should prompt a small Bluesocket window to come up displaying a Logout command.
2. From the 'Go' menu, select 'Connect to Server.'
3. In the window that opens, type 'smb://myfiles.mills.edu' (no quotes) in the 'Server Address:' field. To add this server to your list of 'Favorite Servers,' click the '+' icon to the right of the 'Server Address:' field.
4. Click 'Connect.'
5. In the 'Connect to Server' window that opens, enter your Mills login name in the 'Name' field and your Mills password in the 'Password' field.
6. Click 'Connect.'
7. If a warning comes up about 'Sending your password in clear text,' cick 'Continue.'
8. In the 'myfiles' window that opens, select the volume with your username and click 'Ok.'
9. A window will open to your personal file storage area. You can save files to the server by dragging them on to this window. If you close the window, you can reopen it by double-clicking on the icon with your username on the desktop.
10. IMPORTANT - When you have finished using your file server space, be sure to disconnect from the server by dragging the icon with your username on the desktop to the Trash icon on the dock (as you drag the server volume on to the Trash, the icon will change to an Eject icon).
If you forget to disconnect from the file server, the next person to use the computer will have full access to your private files.
IF YOU FORGET YOUR PASSWORD
There is no way to retrieve your old password. The only way to gain access to the network is to reset your password. Follow the password reset instructions detailed on the Password Setting or Resetting page.
To report network outages please call the computing help desk at ext. 2005 or e-mail helpdesk@mills.edu. Off campus? Phone (510) 430-2005.
