Getting Connected - Server Access Windows XP

Students, faculty, and staff with a Mills account can save personal files on the 'myfiles' file server.

IMPORTANT: this procedure is not required if you are using college-owned computers in labs or faculty/staff offices. Simply log in to the computer and click on 'My Computer' in the Start Menu.  Under 'Network Drives' you will see your 'myfiles' storage space mapped to the 'H:' drive.

Connecting to myfiles.mills.edu

1.  If you are using a wireless computer or personal computer in your residence hall room, be sure to log in via Bluesocket first.

  • Open Internet Exploer.
  • Use your Mills username and password to log in at the Bluesocket interface.
  • Once you are logged in, keep the Bluesocket browser window active, as you will need to log out using that window.
  • IMPORTANT - When finished with network access, log out via the Bluesocket window.

Note: If there is no Bluesocket icon active, close Internet Explorer and open it again. . . or simply open it if it is already closed. This should prompt a small Bluesocket window to come up displaying a Logout command.

2.  Right-click on 'My Computer' in the Start Menu and select 'Map Network Drive.'

3.  At the 'Drive:' pop-up window scroll through the alphabetical list of drives until you find H:. Select the drive by clicking on it.

4.  In the 'Folder:' type \\myfiles\username (username is your Mills login name).

5.  Check 'Reconnect at logon' if you are primarily using your computer on campus and would like the network drive to reconnect every time you use your computer. If you try to click on the network drive when you are off campus, you may need to repeat the previous steps when you return to campus.

6.  You will be prompted for your Mills login name and password.  If you receive an error message when you enter this information, try changing the 'User name' field to MILLS\username (username is your Mills login name).

7.  Click 'Finish.'

8.  Click on 'My Computer' in the Start Menu.  Under 'Network Drives' you will see your 'myfiles' storage space mapped to the 'H:' drive. You are now connected and can browse your files on the campus file server.

IF YOU FORGET YOUR PASSWORD

There is no way to retrieve your old password. The only way to gain access to the network is to reset your password. Follow the Password Instructions detailed on the Computer Orientation page.

To report network outages please call the computing help desk at ext. 2005 or e-mail helpdesk@mills.edu.
