Welcome to the Mills College School of Education.

Diane KetelleI invite you to come to Mills College to continue changing the world, something we have been doing for more than 160 years. Mills provides a very unique learning environment—students and scholars come together to share ideas and conceptualize change in Oakland, one of the most dynamic and creative cities in the world. As the interim dean of the School of Education and a former Mills undergraduate and graduate student, I feel well qualified to predict that your time here will be transformative.

Social justice is what inspires and informs our work in the School of Education. Whether you want to be a teacher, early childhood educator, hospital practitioner, or an educational leader, at Mills you will develop convictions toward equity that are based in relevant research. We are proud that students who graduate from Mills College are socially conscious and contribute to their communities in a multitude of ways. We will support you while you explore diverse ideas and develop sound belief systems in order to lead and learn. We believe that collaboration is at the core of teaching and learning, emerging from close interactions between students and faculty to examine professional practices.

At Mills we will challenge you to think about every child in our society and how each deserves a high-quality education, regardless of where they were born, who their parents are, the color of their skin, the languages they speak, or their socioeconomic status. We will push you to create opportunities for all learners through the development of your reflective practice and hopefulness.

The Mills College School of Education is poised to make a genuine difference in your life. We are committed to helping you learn, innovate, and effect change in the institutions that need it most—our schools and all places of learning.

I look forward to the contribution you will make to the Mills College School of Education.
