Beyond the Classroom

Outside of your pre-med classes, you’ll find a range of opportunities to prepare for medical school and explore your options for a career in medicine.

On-Campus Speakers
The Pre-Med Program, with the active involvement of its students, regularly brings to campus medical school admission directors, physicians in various fields of medicine, health professionals in allied fields, and speakers on global health issues.

Facilities for Research

Pre-med students can participate in faculty-led research in the state-of-the-art laboratories of the Betty Irene Moore Natural Sciences Building. Awarded the highest rating in environmental design and construction, the building also provides pre-med students and faculty with light-filled classrooms, computer labs, and spaces for meeting and socializing.

Community Service
Medical schools look for students who have gained hands-on, clinical experience and proven their commitment to caring for others through community service in hospitals, community clinics, nursing homes, and similar settings. Mills faculty can help pre-med students find volunteering opportunities in the San Francisco Bay Area. Students have volunteered at the Berkeley Free Clinic, Highland Hospital, Kaiser Permanente, and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, among other sites.
