Located in Oakland, California, Mills offers an MA in dance and an MFA in dance. From ballet to butoh, our nationally renowned graduate program encourages students to push the boundaries of choreography, pedagogy, performance, theory, and technology.
The strength of our degree programs springs from our unique combination of creative and critical dance studies, choreography, and performance
practices. Simply put, we stretch the mind as well as the body.
Our distinguished Mills faculty and visiting artists work closely with students to help them develop into articulate artists who can express
themselves both creatively and through critical discourse. We help students hone their skills in performance, choreography, research, and dance writing,
both critical and scholarly.
The Mills Dance Program is both small and highly selective. This allows us to provide students with an immersive experience and the rich one-on-one
interaction that is the hallmark of a Mills education. Our faculty and visiting artists provide broad and varied experience in diverse dance forms and
bring the breadth of their own professional work to the curriculum.
At Mills, we believe that it is important to connect our dance students to the wider creative community. Our location in the heart of one of the
largest, most vibrant urban dance centers in the U.S. allows us to create unique opportunities for our graduate dance students. They have the opportunity
to work with esteemed local artists and organizations on and off campus and participate in master classes taught by nationally respected guest artists.
The Mills Repertory Dance Company provides another opportunity for our students to experience the dances
of renowned choreographers.
Founded in 1941, the Mills Dance Department offers the oldest ongoing dance program in the country. The longevity of our program and its international
reputation are testaments to the quality of instruction and the successful philosophy that guides our curriculum.
