Staffed by graduate English students, The Place for Writers is central to the graduate experience at Mills. More a community than one specific place, we produce a roving series of programs and readings. Our focus is on building relationships outside of the classroom—among Mills graduate students writers, scholars, and artists—and between Mills and the Bay Area literary community, along with professionals in the fields of writing, publishing, and teaching.
The Place for Writers staff produce programs and events, including the Works in Progress reading series, the Contemporary Writers Series, interdisciplinary workshops and performances, conferences and panels on publishing and teaching, open mics, and more. The Place for Writers keeps students updated about various opportunities and deadlines for publications, grants, residencies, and conferences.
The Place is one of innovation—each new group of graduate assistants reevaluates current programming in relation to the dynamic literary community at Mills, often originating new events and programs to serve current student needs.
Both new and continuing students may apply for a partial-tuition graduate assistantship with The Place for Writers. Applications are due by February 1 and are accepted online beginning October 15. If you have questions about The Place for Writers, please direct them to:
