The artists in the M.F.A. program at Mills College always do extraordinary work and this is true of the eleven artists in the spring 2000 exhibition: Christina Barbachano, Daniel Barber, Tessie Barrera-Scharaga, Cassie Davis, Alisa Haller, Kevin Leeper, Michael Meyers, Mara O'Day, Mira Reisberg, TonyTredway and Sandra Wong. But these artists have created something additionally extraordinary--a virtual catalog.
Totally initiated by the artists themselves, this is the very first (but hopefully not the last) on-line catalogue for our program. Each artist contributed one image and a (optional) short statement. There is an admirable visual and conceptual independence to their individual work yet, at the same time, all share a common sense of dedication and professional commitment.
They also have a shared history of time and space. For the last two years these eleven artists have worked closely together in on-campus studios. Hopefully the alliances they have built together during this time, as well as those with the program's faculty, will be maintained as they go their (most probably) separate ways as artists in the near future.
