Beyond the Classroom

Learning isn’t limited to the classroom at Mills. Take a look at some of the opportunities you can have while studying biochemistry and molecular biology.

On-Campus Research Experience

Biochemistry and molecular biology majors have the opportunity to participate in original research with biology and chemistry professors during the summer and the academic school year. Students mentored by biology professors are eligible for research stipends from the Jill Barrett Biology Research Program. Recent student–faculty research has examined:

  • Natural modulators of olfactory adaptation in C. elegans, a type of roundworm
  • Fungicidal compounds derived from redwood
  • Synthetic methodology for carbocation production in ionic liquids
  • Biological function and cellular localization of a gene product in S. cerevisiae, a species of yeast

Access to Facilities & Equipment
Student–faculty research takes place in the state-of-the-art laboratories of the Betty Irene Moore Natural Sciences Building, awarded the highest rating in environmental design and construction. Equipment available for biology and chemistry research includes:
  • Scheffler Bio-Imaging Center, containing a transilluminating fluorescence microscope with digital camera and imaging software and a dissecting scope capable of photo microscopy
  • Thermal cyclers for polymerase chain-reactions
  • Digital gel imaging system
  • Nucleic acid hybridization ovens
  • Ultraviolet wavelength cross-linker
  • Tabletop ultracentrifuge
  • Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometers
  • Gas-liquid and high-performance liquid chromatographs
  • Nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer
  • Fluorometer
  • 96-well plate reader
