Mills-Oakland Promise Scholarships

Mills College is committed to providing a diverse, inclusive environment dedicated to helping Oakland girls and young women succeed in college. To make a transformative Mills education accessible and affordable, we are offering generous scholarships and financial aid to qualified students.

Mills will provide a minimum financial aid scholarship of $7,000 to every Oakland Unified School District high school student admitted this fall with a minimum high school GPA of 3.2. Higher scholarship amounts may be offered to admitted students with higher GPAs.

In addition to these awards, we are excited to offer 10 Mills-Oakland Promise Scholarships, including the African American Female Excellence Scholarship, the Latina Excellence Scholarship, and eight additional Mills-Oakland Promise scholarships.

To qualify for the $7,000 Mills scholarship and be considered for a Mills-Oakland Promise Scholarship, you must:

Admitted students who meet these requirements may receive a Mills-Oakland Promise Scholarship in addition to the $7,000 award.

Additional Aid for Mills-Oakland Promise Scholars

Since scholarships and grants are awards that do not have to be paid back (unlike student loans), we encourage Mills-Oakland Promise students to apply for:

For the fall 2020 term, students who receive the $7,000 Mills scholarship, an Oakland Promise scholarship, and the maximum Pell and Cal Grant awards will have earned enough aid to completely cover the cost of their tuition and fees at Mills. These Mills-Oakland Promise students will be able to attend Mills free of tuition and required fees (subject to continued Oakland Promise scholarship, Pell Grant, and Cal Grant eligibility).

Mills-Oakland Promise Student Commitment

After you are admitted to Mills, your responsibilities as a Mills-Oakland Promise scholar will be to:

  • enroll as a full-time student at Mills College;
  • complete and submit the FAFSA or California Dream Act application every school year;
  • apply for an Oakland Promise scholarship, if eligible;
  • communicate with your faculty, advisors, and academic navigators at Mills in a timely manner so we can support and assist you throughout your college experience;
  • maintain good academic standing;
  • attend regular Oakland Promise meetings;
  • serve as an ambassador for the program and give back to your community in a meaningful way.
