The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) consults with program and department heads on the best strategies for onboarding and mentoring junior faculty.
Typically, onboarding begins with the assignment of courses and advisees and the preparation of junior faculty for teaching and advising. The Provost’s Office typically hosts a new faculty teaching and advising workshop a week before fall classes begin.
Mentoring of faculty begins in a program or department; however the CFE works with department and program heads to establish a formal mentoring program using a mutual mentoring model to create a mentoring network for new faculty. This network of colleagues can include a colleague from the junior faculty’s home department, someone from outside of the junior faculty’s home department, a writing coach, and/or a former member of the Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure (APT) Committee.
