Mills Featured in Fiske Guide to Colleges for Sixth Consecutive Year

Oakland, CA–August 09, 2011 For the sixth consecutive year, Mills College has been featured in the Fiske Guide to Colleges 2012. Highly regarded as an unbiased source of information, the Fiske Guide to Colleges features only 315 of the country’s best and most interesting colleges and universities from more than 2,200 four-year schools nationwide.

Authored by former New York Times education editor, Edward B. Fiske, the Fiske Guide characterizes Mills as an institution where, “women receive more than just a liberal arts education. Students are expected to graduate with a deeper understanding of social issues and a broad knowledge base to help ensure they will be technologically savvy and artistically aware of the world around them.”

The guide describes Mills’ academic climate as “tough but cooperative,” with students explaining that “although the courses are relatively difficult, the professors are experts in their field and extremely approachable,” and that “since most of them are women, there’s no shortage of strong female role models.”

“Mills students enjoy small classes with excellent teaching in one of the country’s most desirable locations close to San Francisco,” the guide says; adding that “this small bastion of higher learning continues to provide ambitious women with a stellar education and a host of opportunities.” Fiske credits Mills with an educational program that emphasizes skills critical for understanding today’s society and succeeding in the real world, saying “women are sure to graduate as independent thinkers capable of making it on their own.”

The Fiske Guide annual reviews are based on questionnaire responses from college administrators as well as current students. Students were asked about all aspects of college life including academics, social and extracurricular activities, housing, dining, financial aid, and campus setting.
