the Best Colleges in the West

Oakland, CA–September 12, 2012 Mills College has been named as one of the top-tier regional universities in the country by U.S. News & World Report for the fifth consecutive year and is highly ranked among institutions that offer students a great value.

In the 2013 Best Colleges guide, Mills is ranked fifth among colleges and universities in the West that offer a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs. The U.S. News & World Report guide includes 626 universities across the nation as “Best Regional Universities”; 121 institutions are listed as the best in the West.

Mills College is also ranked among colleges and universities in the West that provide high academic quality at a good price. In this ranking in the “Great Schools, Great Prices” category, Mills is recognized for its academic quality relative to the net cost of attendance for students receiving financial aid. In 2011–12, 80 percent of Mills students received need-based aid.

"It is gratifying to be recognized again as one of the top institutions in the West. We are proud to be ranked as an institution that provides a quality academic experience and also a good economic value for our students and their families,” said Mills College Provost Sandra C. Greer.

In the 2013 edition of Best Colleges, Mills received an overall college rating of 82. Among the Western schools, it was noted that Mills had a high percentage of classes with less than 20 students (77 percent of classes in 2011 had fewer than 20 students). The average giving rate of its alumnae (23 percent) is also among the top for Western schools.

Among the many factors weighed in determining the rankings, the key measures of quality are: peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving, graduation rates, and high school counselor ratings of colleges.
