Mills Student Reporters Go Behind the Scenes of Oakland Public Schools for KALW Public Radio
Oakland, CA–February 04, 2013 Turning the tables on public opinion, Mills College students are helping show how the Oakland Unified School District is filled with positive news.
Each year, public radio courses allow Mills students to delve into local issues for reports to be broadcast on NPR affiliate KALW Public Radio. This year, students from the Introduction to Public Radio class went inside Oakland’s public schools to herald some surprising success stories in the troubled district.
In 12 captivating segments airing this week, Mills reporters show how even the most financially strapped schools can implement programs and teaching styles that breed hope. In recognition of Bay Area teachers, listeners will be asked to call in to Tuesday’s program with “shout outs” to the teachers who have inspired them the most.
