Mills College Shows its Green Side with Earth Week Activities
Celebrating Campus-wide Commitment to Sustainability

Oakland, CA–April 12, 2013 In keeping with its long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship, Mills College will kick off a celebration of Earth Day with a week of campus activities designed to bolster the ongoing sustainability efforts of Mills. From bicycle-safety classes that encourage cycling over driving to grow-your-own food activities and energy-saving efforts, the entire campus community will be thinking and acting “green.”

Mills invites members of the community to take part in our commitment to sustainability for the following Earth Week events:

11:00 am to 1:30 pm
The eARTh Faire: Check out hand-made crafts from the Mills community, discover local environmental organizations, visit the farmers market stand, and eat out in the sunshine of Holmgren Meadow.

12:15 pm
Rubber Ducky Race: Starting at the Post Road Bridge Restoration Site, Mills celebrates the preservation of its natural waterways with this annual event.

10:00 am to 5:00 pm
Botanic Garden Plant Sale in the Mills College Botanic Garden: Support the garden while also gaining a special plant addition to your home, office, or garden. There will also be hands-on workshops.

2:30 pm – 5:00 pm
Herbal Remedies: This open-house style workshop at the Gaia House features an introduction to the preparation of herbal remedies plus a chance to make an aromatherapy “dream pillow” and herbal beeswax salve.

12:00 pm
Spokes Folks Slow Race: It's a bicycle race for how slow can you go in Holmgren Meadow

7:30 pm
Chasing Ice Screening: Chasing Ice is the story of one man’s mission to change the tide of history by gathering undeniable evidence of our changing planet. His time-lapse cameras compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. The screening takes place in the Faculty/Staff Lounge and includes free pizza.

9:00 am to 12:00 pm
Mills Creek Care Day: As the closing event of Earth Week 2013, Mills will run its Creek Care Day in conjunction with the City of Oakland Earth Day activities. The West Oakland BOOST! Mentoring Program will also be joining us. As always, there will be free refreshments, botanical expertise, and a community of dirt worshippers! Creek Care Day takes place at the Post Road Restoration Site, across from Olney Hall.
