U.S. News & World Report  Ranks Mills Among the Best Colleges in the West

Oakland, CA–September 10, 2013 Mills College has been named as one of the top-tier regional universities in the country by U.S. News & World Report for the sixth consecutive year and ranks high in offering students a great value.

In the 2014 Best Colleges guide, Mills is ranked fifth among colleges and universities in the West that offer a full range of undergraduate majors and master’s programs. The U.S. News & World Report guide includes 621 universities across the nation as “Best Regional Universities;” 90 institutions are listed as the best in the West.

Mills College is also ranked among colleges and universities in the West that provide high academic quality at a good price. In this ranking in the “Great Schools at Great Prices” category, Mills is recognized for its academic quality relative to the net cost of attendance for students receiving financial aid. In 2012–13, 80 percent of Mills students received need-based aid.

"It is gratifying to be ranked again as one of the top institutions in the West. We are particularly pleased to be recognized both for our high-quality academic experience and good economic value for students and families,” said Mills College Provost and Dean of the Faculty Kimberley L. Phillips.

In the 2014 edition of Best Colleges, Mills received an overall college rating of 86 out of 100, a four percent (82 to 86) increase over its 2013 rating. Among western schools, it was noted that Mills had a high percentage of classes with fewer than 20 students (74 percent of classes in 2012 had fewer than 20 students). The average giving rate of Mills alumnae (23 percent) is also among the top for western schools.

Among the many factors weighed in determining the rankings, the key measures of quality are: graduation and retention rates, peer assessment, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumnae/i giving, and high school counselor ratings of colleges.
