Mills Alumna Claire Ptak ’97 broke tradition with her own stunning wedding cake creation for the royal wedding. Foregoing the traditional tiered fruitcake with a non-tiered elderflower and lemon sponge cake, Ptak sourced as much as possible from the Queen’s private Norfolk home.
Ptak, who studied film at Mills College and trained under Alice Waters at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, was surprised when she received a call, out of the blue, from bride-to-be Meghan Markle with a special request to make the cake.
“She asked me to come to Kensington Palace and give her and Harry some options for the cake,” said Ptak. “I tried to think about the time of year that the wedding is and spring flowers, and also my favourite flavours.”
“I’m really pleased that they chose an independent business and I really like what they stand for,” Ptak told Vogue over lunch, a week ahead of the wedding.
