Mills Alum Chosen to Create Royal Wedding Cake

Oakland, CA—March 21, 2018

Royal ChefKensington Palace just announced that Mills alum Claire Ptak ’97 has been selected to make Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding cake. Chef Ptak will create a lemon elderflower cake covered in buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers for the royal wedding on May 19.

The Californian pastry chef, who is also a food writer and food stylist originally studied film theory and video art at Mills College.

In 2010, she opened Violet Bakery in London, a small bakery creating American-style cupcakes, brownies and pastries, using seasonal and organic ingredients. A recent Elle article explains how she made the leap from film theory to earning the honor of creating the royal wedding cake.

Called one of the rising stars of London’s culinary scene by CBS This Morning, Ptak is the author of The Violet Bakery Cookbook and several other cookbooks.
