Last week’s Mills Music Now concert, which featured the compositions of Ashley Fure, Jean Macduff Vaux Composer-in-Residence at Mills, was thought-provoking, compelling, and evocative, notes San Francisco Classical Voice. Fure, who has earned many honors, including both a Rome Prize and Guggenheim Fellowship in 2017, also delivered a lecture prior to the concert. San Francisco Classical Voice described Fure’s works as “sumptuous offering of sounds,” and noted that the Mills students in the audience should be inspired to compose after hearing Fure’s three pieces.
The review also lauded the performance of Mills instructor and avant-garde percussionist William Winant, who performed an extract of Fure’s The Force of Things: An Opera for Objects, noting, “it continues to be comforting, when faced with increasingly difficult scores, to see the human’s place in contemporary music so reaffirmed.”
