Mills Music Teacher Roscoe Mitchell’s New Album Draws Raves from Critics

Oakland, CA—August 16, 2017

Roscoe Mitchell, the Darius Milhaud Professor of Music at Mills College since 2007, has just released a two-disc set called Bells for the South Side to critical acclaim. The Village Voice called the album “a remarkable, vibrant piece of work from a musician who listened to the elders and then became one.” And the East Bay Express said the compositions and improvisation displayed in Mitchell’s latest album are proof of his “ongoing role as a mentor and vanguard artist.”  Mitchell is a founding member of Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. He has recorded more than 100 albums over his 50+ year career. Mitchell plays the saxophone and teaches composition and improvisation at Mills.
