Mills College Receives Highly Coveted “Inspiring Programs in STEM Award”

Oakland, CA—August 8, 2019

2019 Inspiring Programs in Stem Award from Insight into Diversity Magazine

Mills College is proud to announce that the Jill Barrett Biology Research Program has been selected to receive the prestigious 2019 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. Mills will be featured in the September 2019 issue along with 49 other recipients.

Inspiring Programs in STEM Award winners were selected based on efforts to inspire and encourage a new generation of young people to consider careers in STEM through mentoring, teaching, research, and successful programs and initiatives.

"Women leaders in STEM remain scarce today even though women have earned about half of all life sciences degrees since the late 1990's,” says Mills College President, Elizabeth L. Hillman. “The Jill Barrett Biology Research Program elevates learning and leadership both, and Mills is thrilled that its long-term impact in inspiring women to pursue careers in the biological sciences is being recognized."

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected the Jill Barrett Biology Research Program at Mills College because it encourages the advancement of women in the biological sciences by providing research experiences for undergraduate students that are fostered through close mentorships with faculty. Students engage in research projects that aim to provide insights into unanswered questions in biology. In the process, students gain technical skills, practice in the logic and creativity of science, and experience analyzing and presenting data. Most importantly, students learn leadership skills and the value of their contributions to new biological knowledge.

“We know that many STEM programs are not always recognized for their success, dedication, and mentorship for underrepresented students,” says Lenore Pearlstein, owner and publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “We want to honor the schools and organizations that have created programs that inspire and encourage young people who may currently be in or are interested in a future career in STEM. We are proud to honor these programs as role models to other institutions of higher education and beyond.”
