Oakland, CA—September 14, 2020
U.S. News & World Report gives Mills high marks in its 2021 Best Colleges Guide, where the College is featured for the fourteenth consecutive year as a top-ranked regional university in the West. This year, Mills takes two first-place honors as both a #1 Best Value College and #1 in the category for Best Undergraduate Teaching.
The annual college guide measures the academic quality of bachelor’s degree-granting institutions across the United States, compiling rankings based on success indicators such as student retention and graduation rates, selectivity, and survey data from top college officials at peer institutions.
As a California-based college that offers graduate programs in addition to its undergraduate curriculum, Mills ranks among the Regional Universities (West) category, where this year the school ranks #1 as an overall Best Value institution. To tabulate the rankings for its Best Value colleges, U.S, News & World Report takes into account various statistics, including average test scores for admitted students, tuition and financial aid (in 2018, the cost of attendance was reduced by 36 percent), student-faculty ratios, and post-graduate employment, among other factors.
For a third year in a row, Mills also received accolades for the quality of its undergraduate teaching, this year landing first place in the category. Institutions ranked here are nominated by college presidents, provosts, and admissions deans from comparable schools. That same pool of higher education leaders votes for those nominees which they believe exhibit the highest level of commitment to providing an unparalleled level of instruction to its undergraduate students by way of attracting talented faculty who design dynamic and impactful curricula.
Institutional peer assessment surveys from education leaders also recognize Mills as among the Most Innovative Schools in the West, while administrative data indicates that the College serves as a Social Mobility accelerator for its students. The latter category (in which Mills ranks at #13) measures how successfully schools graduate students who receive federal Pell Grant aid, which is financial assistance made available to students who come from modest socioeconomic backgrounds. Meanwhile, the Most Innovative Schools (where Mills places at #8), are determined by popular assessment from top administrators who rank peer institutions they believe to be making the most innovative improvements in terms of curriculum, faculty, students, campus life, technology, or facilities.
As a result of these myriad strengths, U.S. News & World Report touts Mills College as a top-ranking Regional University in the West, where the College weighs in at the #12 spot with an overall score of 75 out of 100, making it one of the best liberal arts colleges in the western United States.
