Mills College has been named the #1 Best Value College in the West for the third time since 2017 and one of the top regional universities in the West for the fifteenth consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report. Mills continues to receive high rankings for Best Undergraduate Teaching and Best Social Mobility.
In the 2022 Best Colleges guide, Mills College has ranked in the top ten among regional colleges and universities in the West. Regional universities and colleges offer a full range of undergraduate majors and master’s degree programs but have few, if any, doctoral degrees.
The annual college guide measures the academic quality of bachelor’s degree-granting institutions across the United States, compiling rankings based on success indicators such as student retention and graduation rates, selectivity, and survey data from top college officials at peer institutions.
Mills College ranks #1 in Best Value (Regional Universities West) for providing a top-ranked education at an affordable price. This category looks at a number of measurements, including average test scores for admitted students, tuition and financial aid, student-faculty ratios, and post-graduate employment, among other factors.
For the fourth consecutive year, Mills received accolades for the quality of its undergraduate teaching, earning nineteenth in the category. Institutions ranked here are nominated by college presidents, provosts, and admissions deans from comparable schools. That same pool of higher education leaders votes for those nominees which they believe exhibit the highest level of commitment to providing an unparalleled level of instruction to its undergraduate students by way of attracting talented faculty who design dynamic and impactful curricula.
"Mills’ continued recognition by U.S. News as a top college reflects Mills' legacy of educating students for engaged, global citizenship in a rapidly and constantly evolving society,” noted Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Patricia L. Hardaway. “The Mills education cultivates critical and strategic thinking by combining transformative and innovative pedagogy inside of the classroom with experiential learning opportunities outside of the classroom."
Mills also received top marks in the category of Best Social Mobility (#4), which looks at how successfully schools graduate students who receive Pell Grant Aid. Economically disadvantaged students are less likely than others to finish college, and U.S. News finds that Mills College is having more success than others by enrolling and graduating a significant proportion of historically underserved students.
