Connect with a Community of Writers.

Students are the voice behind literary events at Mills College. The Place for Writers is a community of graduate English students who produce a roving series of programs and readings throughout the academic year, including the Contemporary Writers Series, the Works in Progress reading series, interdisciplinary workshops and performances, conferences and panels on publishing and teaching, open mics, and more.

Works in Progress Reading Series

Faculty and students present new work side by side at this critical and creative reading series—a great place to showcase your work or find inspiration from others.

Contemporary Writers Series

Students have the opportunity to listen to and interact with the world-class writers, scholars, and artists who visit campus every semester. Each reading is followed by an intimate reception.

Recent visiting writers have included:

  • Joyce Carol Oates
  • Daniel Handler (Lemony Snicket series)
  • Eileen Myles
  • Victor LaValle
  • Anne Carson
  • Natalie Baszile
  • Solmaz Sharif

Our literary events help you build relationships and networks outside the classroom with writers, scholars, and artists from both Mills and the Bay Area literary communities. You can also build connections with professionals in the fields of writing, publishing, and teaching.
