Dr. Patricia Lofton Hardaway joined Mills College as interim provost and vice president of academic affairs beginning July 1, 2021. An experienced higher education leader with a demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and excellence, and deep expertise in strategic change and labor relations, she was president and provost of Wilberforce University, the oldest private historically Black university in the US, and has held executive positions at a variety of colleges and universities, including Hebrew Union College, Trinity College, and Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Her higher education roles have varied widely, from running an admissions program to improving enrollment among under-represented groups at a small college to managing faculty evaluation processes at a major research university. She has provided consulting services with higher education institutions, health centers, and businesses on matters involving governance, strategic planning, organizational change, and policy.
In addition to her outstanding academic career, Dr. Hardaway built a vibrant private legal practice representing corporate clients in traditional labor matters and complex employment discrimination litigation before the federal and state courts of New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey. She also guided and conducted regulatory related internal investigations for a major pharmaceutical corporation, where she provided legal and business operation advice to senior leaders in multiple manufacturing, research, sales, and corporate business divisions in the US, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.
Dr. Hardaway is a developer of strategies and ideas; she coaches people to achieve increased capabilities and acquire new skill sets in her professional and community volunteer roles. Dr. Hardaway frequently is an invited speaker on legal, business, governance, and ethics topics for continuing legal education classes, professional association conferences, and business and industry organizations. She conducts training for corporate executives, managers, and supervisors on a wide range of management and higher education topics.
Dr. Hardaway holds a JD from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, a MPW from the University of Pittsburgh, a BA from Wilberforce University, and an honorary doctor of humane letters from Payne Theological Seminary.
